Obtaining A College Scholarship For Softball: Tips And Resources
Is your game good enough for a college scholarship? If you believe it is - and you should believe it is - then you probably already are aware that the standard of NAIA and NCAA softball is very high.
Attending a few games to observe the actual intensity of play at this level is certainly recommended. Only the top tier HS players will be approached with softball scholarship offers. It tough, but not impossible. Most HS softball players - with the help of their parents - will try to market themselves, while others will utilize a scholarship recruiting service. If you decided to go this route, beware there are many services to choose from. And some of them can be costly.
One scholarship service with an excellent reputation is the National Collegiate Scouting Association. NCSA offers excellent tips and even allows for a player to submit a video of herself in action to help facilitate the recruitment process.
MARKETING TIP: It doesn't matter how good you are, to get recruited and be in line for a college softball scholarship you need to tell the college coaches who you are and why you deserve to be recruited. You have to make it happen, you have to contact the coaches and tell them what you have to offer their softball program and why you deserve financial aid.
GOOD NEWS: Not all athletic scholarships are full ride like football and basketball, so called "head count sports", most are classed as "equivalency sports'", like softball. This means that coaches can "share" their allocation between a larger number of players. This is good news for would-be softball scholarship seekers. Here's why: At the division 1 level a coach can divide "12" scholarships between a larger number of players. Say 25 partial instead of 12 full ride scholarships. If you are good enough of course then a full ride scholarship is always on the cards. There are 262 division 1 and 253 division 2 colleges that offer softball scholarships. That's a total of 4,965.6 softball grants available in the NCAA alone.
You can use the Library of Softball to search for additional softball scholarship resources.
Good luck!
